Exmoor is one of the country’s most picturesque National Parks, renowned for its wild Exmoor ponies and superb riding country. The scenery combines rugged moorland, clad in heather and gorse, with deep wooded valleys or ‘combes’ often with a fast-running stream at the bottom, making riding on Exmoor spectacular all year round. In fact, the best way to see and experience Exmoor is probably on horseback!
There are several riding stables in the area, but we have known the team at Pine Lodge Riding Stables for years and always been impressed with their care for their horses and knowledge of the best local rides.
Located at Chilcott Farm, Pine Lodge can advise on what horse or pony you should ride, depending on your level of experience, height, weight and degree of confidence. They offer a variety of rides by the hour and by the half and even full day – a real treat when you stop off for lunch at a nearby pub like the Tarr Farm Inn at Tarr Steps.
Pine Lodge offers:
Pony Experience: A half-hour pony experience for children, on the leading rein with a rosette at the end
Novice Rides: Accompanied hacks for less experienced adults and children on or off the leading rein
Experienced Rides: Ride through forests and rivers and canter across breathtaking open moorland
Safari Day Rides: Ride and stop for lunch at Tarr Steps or Molland.
Just dress comfortably and for the weather. Pine Lodge can offer plenty of advice if you need it when you make your booking and even provide riding hats. What to wear riding at Pine Lodge.

Once you arrive in the yard, they will make sure the horse, or pony is properly tacked up and ready for you. You’ll be asked to state honestly and ‘sign off’ on your level of experience and confidence etc, so they can be sure to give you the best and safest experience.
Woodleigh Cottage in Dulverton is an ideal base for your walking, riding or cycling holiday, with free parking for up to two cars. The 16th century cottage is pretty, cosy and full of rustic charm.
